Learning to Faux Finish a Kitchen Countertop Saved Home Owner $$$$$

Mary bought her home and undertook a huge makeover of the entire house.  All that remained was to update the kitchen. Overall, this kitchen did not look too bad; a little “blah” and not very exciting. The owner really wanted granite counter tops but that was a little out of her budget at the time, especially as she had such a large kitchen. Granite counter tops usually run between $60 and $120 a square foot, installed, so this counter would have cost $3-6,000 to replace…. Mary needed a faux granite counter top.

The kitchen appliances were black, the cabinets were cherry and the counter tops were a peach/pink color. The counter tops were in good condition with the exception of one big problem. They were extremely sticky as the previous owners of her home fried food a great deal.
The Do-it-Yourself DVD taught Mary how to properly clean her kitchen countertops thoroughly in preparation for countertop painting. NO paint product will stick to grease.

She went ahead with her countertop makeover and surprised herself by learning to faux finish a kitchen countertop in just a few days
.

Her friends were incredibly impressed and still comment on how authentic the counters look.

"This is a very typical 1970's Formica counter which is still in good condition but very dated. It would have been a costly job to replace, particularly because the laminate was applied to the wall as well as the counter. Refinishing was a much less expensive option and the results are truly stunning. Deborah got her whole family involved and it really looks as though they had fun working together. Great job guys!!"

PLEASE NOTE: Proper preparation of the countertop surface is essential to the success of painting laminate counter tops. Michaela is very particular about what advice you follow for cleaning as well as painting countertops. In the DVD, she passes along some great tips on how to reach those awkward areas such as behind the faucet and how to remove tough grease build up, WITHOUT SANDING. It is important to know that no matter how gorgeous your faux finish counter tops look, if you did not follow all four steps of the process correctly,  YOUR BEAUTIFUL WORK WILL
PEAL OFF.

Countertop Refinishing with a Faux Finish was the Perfect Granite Countertop Substitute

This kitchen was only ten years old and in very good condition. However, the owners were tired of the white countertops that stained constantly. They really did not relish the idea of tearing their nice home apart to install new countertops.  So a granite countertop substitute was found in Countertop Transfauxmations. They chose the same colors as they used for their faux marble fireplace in their living room, which enabled the rooms to “flow” together nicely.

A Tiny Bathroom Transformed from "Disastrous to
Dramatic" After its Countertop Makeover

Here again, is a very typical thirty-year-old bathroom, textured Formica countertop (basket weave, no less), a huge wall-to-wall mirror, out dated faucet, fixtures and hardware and a dark, dismal vanity unit. Add to that the UGLY tiled floor and poorly painted walls….
At first glance, you would put your head in your hands and wonder what on earth you could do with such an unattractive,
small space.

A very happy customer, Stephanie, sent her before/after pictures to me to show off her fabulous new counters. I am so happy to show you the great job she did in creating these stunning faux granite counter tops. She had emailed me during the painting process to make sure she was on track and we discussed color combinations, etc. She was right on track and the results prove it.   She emailed me a couple of days later to let me know that her sister stopped by to see what she had accomplished and she could not believe her eyes when she saw Stephanie’s handy work. It makes me smile too, when people share their great results! Stephanie transformed the entire kitchen by painting her cabinets too, and changing the hardware as I did in my own kitchen.   I cannot tell you how many people have said, “I have a burn on my counter top just like that” when they see this picture. It’s very common and so many people think they are doomed to replacing the whole kitchen counter…. NOT SO!

This burn came as a surprise to us when we bought our home. It was hidden by a plant so, when we took possession, I knew one of the first jobs on my “To Do” list would have to be to “Faux finish kitchen counter
top.
Not a big problem as I knew it would only take couple of days to complete the whole kitchen and we would have beautiful faux granite counter tops for less than $70 in materials and a little time. Who ever would know that there used to be a huge burn there?
