  Do-It-Yourself Countertop Faux Finishes

Creating a faux granite counter top has to be the easiest faux finishing project you will tackle and the results will astound you. You must follow the four steps shown on the Countertop Transfauxmations DVD and use the correct products but, if you have ever sponge painted, you will understand how easy this is.

The first step is bonding your countertop. You will learn how to create a super smooth first coat that sets the stage for the remaining steps. Detail is provided on how to choose the correct color combination to ensure a natural granite look.

It is important that the results are convincing and don’t look like a painted counter.

You will be sponging colors onto your dried base color and blending gently until you achieve the look you desire.

Tip: Look at a real piece of granite to give you an idea of what you should be
aiming for.

Next, you will seal the faux granite with several coats of protective finish and you are shown a simple finishing technique to achieve a super smooth finish. It is this small detail that makes the difference between “Did you paint your counters?” and “Oh, I love your new granite counter tops!”

TIP:
Your kitchen is never completely out of service and you may gently use your faux granite counters within two days of painting, but remember, they toughen up and dry thoroughly in about two weeks.
